Paragon and Paragon-X

Calnex Paragon and Paragon-X products test and verify that Ethernet-sync and packet-transport products meet industry standards and work reliably under real-world conditions.

Uniquely, Calnex Paragon lets you capture real-world Packet Delay Variation (PDV) profiles from your existing network and replay those same profiles in a controlled lab environment, enabling you to prove your 1588v2, CES and NTP products will work in the complex world of Ethernet switches, routers and gateways before deployment.

In addition, the Paragon-X tests up to 10G and is also able to measure the accuracy of the recovered Time of Day (ToD) and Frequency (MTIE/TDEV) to the specified limits.

  • Fully stress-test elements that deliver synchronisation over packet-based networks.
  • Prove 1588v2 (PTP), Sync-E, CES, Pseudowire, NTP, etc. implementations. to ITU-T G.8261, etc.
  • Measure recovered Time of Day (ToD) and Frequency (MTIE/TDEV) to specified limits (G.823, G.824, etc.) (Paragon-X only)
  • Stress and validate Ethernet OAM to Y.1731 and 802.1ag
  • Capture real-world PDV profiles over long periods, then replay these in a repeatable, controllable environment.
  • Edit and change monitored PDV profiles before replay.
  • Introduce packet corruption events, lost packets, mis-ordered packets, and repeated packets.
  • Validate Sync-E and ESMC to ITU-T G.8262 and G.8264

Paragon-i

Calnex Paragon-i is an installation and maintenance tool, designed for field testing and verification of 1588v2, Sync-E and Time of Day (ToD) in the network.

The Paragon-i can test Time of Day (ToD) and Frequency (E1, T1 or any frequency) accuracy to nanoseconds . If there are failures or problems with these tests, Paragon-i can also analyse the 1588v2 PTP and Sync-E performance to allow the user to troubleshoot and fix these problems.

  • Test Time of Day (ToD) accuracy and verify it is below required limits (e.g. + 1.5µs for TD-SCDMA or TD-LTE)
  • Analyse 1588v2 (PTP) Packet Delay Variation (PDV) is below specified limits (including MAFE, MinTDEV, etc.)
  • Measure and validate Sync-E compliance to ITU-T G.8262 (MITE/TDEV)
  • Measure E1/T1 recovered clock compliance to ITU-T G.823/G.824 (MITE/TDEV)
  • All of the above at the same time
  • Replay test files on Paragon to reproduce real network problems back in the lab

Technologies

1588v2 PTP The IEEE 1588v2 Precision Time Protocol (PTP) enables the transfer of timing across a Packet Transport Network. Testing 1588v2 PTP involves proving the accuracy and performance of clock recovery according to the ITU-T G.8261 Test Cases. It also includes testing protocol conformance as well as evaluating the accuracy of Time of Day (ToD) and Frequency under Real Network conditions.
Sync-E Synchronous Ethernet (or Sync-E) is an enhancement of legacy Ethernet at the physical layer to provide more accuracy when synchronisation is recovered from the line. Testing Sync-E involves validating the physical performance according to the ITU-T G.8262 recommendation and proving conformance of the management protocol (ESMC) to the ITU-T G.8264 recommendation.
CES (Pseudowire / SAToP / CESoP / TDMoIP) Circuit Emulation Services (CES) enable the transfer of TDM (E1, T1, etc.) traffic over Ethernet. Testing CES involves proving the accuracy of data and timing transfer according the the ITU-T G.8261 and MEF-18 Test Cases.
Ethernet OAM (Y.1731 / 802.1ag) Ethernet Operations, Administration and Management (OAM) enables Ethernet networks to provide fault detection and reporting as well as manage and monitor the performance. Additionally, it provides for protection of service in case of faults. Testing Y.1731 and 802.1ag involves creating targetted fault and impairment conditions and validating the correct operation and reporting of the Ethernet OAM elements.
